Biographies: Nigel Masters - Drums Nigel joined the Band in January 2012. He also played percussion in the Bodmin School orchestra at numerous venues including the Royal albert Hall. Some of the previous Band's Nigel's played in include :- 'Sleepflower' 'Geronimos Cadillac' 'E.B.G.Beeze' 'Kowalski' 'Chimp Boy Jones' 'Kill the Muffin' 'Headflux' and 'Tankslapper'.
About 5 years ago, he felt he had 'hit a wall' with his playing and needing to do something about it, replied to an advert in the 'Rhythm Magazine' for 'The Ultimate Drumming experience' designed for teachers and experienced players looking to progress their playing and teaching. Despite being limited to 60 places, he was succesful and thrived within the concentrated, 5 days course, puttin gup with the luxury 5 star hotel whilst hanging out with some of the best drummers in the world ( including Steve Smith of Journey, Ralph Salmins - BBC Orchestra, Craig Blundell and guest lessons from Jeff Davenport, Vic Firth, Mike Dolbear).
Like all good players, Nigel will tell you that despite learning so much from this one week, he is always learning and he continues to attend UDE's, enjoying lessons from the best of the best ( including Jason Bowld - Pitch Shifter, Stanton Moore- Gallactic, Geoff Dugmore - Varoius inc Playing on 50 N0 1 Songs, Geoff Dunn - Van Morrison, Jojo Mayer- Technician, Pete Cater- Buddy Rich Big Band, Neal Wilkinson- James Morrison to name a few).
Throughout his career, he's met some really nice people and can genuinley say the drumming community is like a big family of inspiring lovely people. In 2010 he attended the Freddiegee Drum Academy with lessons from Craig Blundell (pushing his boundaries of time & concept) Steve White's ( Paul Weller) traditional style and approach getting him really thinking out of the box and Micheal Mondisar, a truly great guy and player. Nigel contiues to practice and have lessons from Alex Smith (a great player with a natural feel and much experience in west end shows, panto, yamaha drum school, and currently playing with 'Joey the Lips').
He is also currently re working his Trinity Guildhall Grades with his son Callum (aged 15) who plays Drums in the same Bodmin School orchestra that he did many years ago, "We have an ongoing bet that whoever gets the highest grade marks gets £20" laughs Nigel. Helping his son to play and practice more, also brushes up his reading and playing skills and currently (Jan 2012) they are working on their grade 6 (having both passed grade 2 and 4 with distinctions), watch this space.
" I feel I'm at the best I've ever been right now and Joining 'Blue on Black' will push my boundaries even further in my musical Drumming path.
Its a true honour to play with Blue on Black, Keith and Paul are such great musicains and I know we're set for 'Heaps' of 'Weapons Grade, Rockin' Blues gigs.
Equipment: Drum Kit: Nigel has a few drum kits (including a Tama Starclassic performer, a Sonor Sonic Plus and a Roland TD12K) but his favourite is a 'Tama Starclassic Bubinga' ,Cream Gloss with Silver Sparkle Stripes, which he currently plays with Blue On Black ( "Until I get a new one !" ).
He also uses 'Protection Racket' cases.
